Latest Braves News
Spencer Strider : Loses again
Strider (0-5) took the loss Sunday against San Francisco, allowing four runs (three earned) on three hits and three walks across six innings. He struck out five. Strider has taken a loss in all five of his appearances this season, but Sunday's outing marked his first time completing six innings this year. The 26-year-old hasn't been consistently healthy since 2023, but he's now made four straight turns through Atlanta's rotation. He's still finding his footing though, owning a 5.85 ERA and a 19:10 K:BB over 20 innings. Fresh off a quality start, Strider is on track for a matchup with the lowly Rockies next weekend.
Matthew Olson : Plates three in loss
Olson went 1-for-4 with a two-run double and an RBI fielder's choice during Sunday's 4-3 loss to San Francisco. Olson notched his second three-RBI game of the campaign Sunday and has logged a hit in nine of his last 11 appearances. The first baseman is 10-for-40 (.250) with eight RBI, seven runs scored and a 7:9 BB:K during that span. On the year, Olson is slashing .236/.342/.460 with 13 long balls.
Austin Cox : Returns to Triple-A
Atlanta optioned Cox to Triple-A Gwinnett on Sunday. The left-hander was called up Saturday but will return to the minors without seeing the mound. Cox has a 3.86 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 26:9 K:BB across 23.1 innings at the Triple-A level this season.
Drake Baldwin : Continuing to split reps
Baldwin is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Giants. Baldwin and Sean Muphy have alternated starts behind the plate over the past 10 games, and that trend will continue after Baldwin went 1-for-4 with a strikeout in Saturday's contest. Murphy will bat sixth and do the catching for righty Spencer Strider in Sunday's series finale.
Alex Verdugo : On bench Sunday
Verdugo is out of the lineup for Sunday's game at San Francisco. Verdugo started the previous five games but will take a seat Sunday after going 3-for-15 with a double and an RBI during that span. Eli White will man left field and bat eighth against Giants righty Landen Roupp in the series finale.
Pierce Johnson : Surrenders walk-off homer
Johnson (1-3) blew the save and took the loss Saturday against San Francisco. He allowed two runs on two hits while striking out one over two-thirds of an inning. The right-hander has taken the loss on back-to-back days, this time giving up a two-run homer to Matt Chapman that spoiled Bryce Elder's stellar outing. Johnson has gotten a shot at closing games amid Raisel Iglesias' struggles, but he's posted a 6.23 ERA and 1.73 WHIP over his past 10 appearances, and he has more blown saves on the year (two) than successful conversions (one) .
Bryce Elder : Sets career high in strikeouts
Elder did not factor into the decision Saturday, allowing one run on three hits and no walks over eight innings against San Francisco. He struck out 12. The right-hander delivered his most dominant outing of the season, setting a career high with 12 strikeouts while allowing just one run on a Wilmer Flores homer in the fourth inning. Elder has bounced between the majors and Triple-A, but he's shown improvement as the season has progressed, posting a 2.97 ERA and 0.96 WHIP over his past five starts with Atlanta. The 26-year-old should remain in the rotation moving forward with AJ Smith-Shawver (elbow) out.
Raisel Iglesias : Passed over for save chance
Iglesias did not pitch Saturday despite Atlanta holding a 2-1 lead in the ninth inning against the Giants. Iglesias has struggled over the last month, allowing 11 earned runs across 10 innings pitched. After blowing a save and taking a loss Thursday, manager Brian Snitker noted that Iglesias was not necessarily Atlanta's primary closer moving forward, per Mark Bowman of MLB.com. He was unavailable to pitch Friday but was then passed over in a save chance Saturday. Pierce Johnson got the save opportunity instead, but he blew the chance by allowing a two-run home run to Matt Chapman.
