McGuire is starting at catcher and batting ninth in Thursday's game against the Nationals. McGuire will pick up his first start since Sunday as Carson Kelly gets a breather. McGuire launched two home runs in his first game of the year back on May 25, but he's gone 0-for-9 with three strikeouts across three games since then. The veteran catcher doesn't have a ton of fantasy value as long as Kelly is healthy, and McGuire will likely be moved off the MLB roster entirely whenever Miguel Amaya (oblique) is able to return from the injured list.

Reese McGuire Latest News
Starting Thursday

McGuire is starting at catcher and batting ninth in Thursday's game against the Nationals. McGuire will pick up his first start since Sunday as Carson Kelly gets a breather. McGuire launched two home runs in his first game of the year back on May 25, but he's gone 0-for-9 with three strikeouts across three games since then. The veteran catcher doesn't have a ton of fantasy value as long as Kelly is healthy, and McGuire will likely be moved off the MLB roster entirely whenever Miguel Amaya (oblique) is able to return from the injured list.
Goes deep twice in 2025 debut

McGuire went 2-for-5 with two solo home runs in Sunday's 11-8 win over the Reds. McGuire had his contract selected from Triple-A Iowa earlier in the day to replace Miguel Amaya (oblique) on the roster, and the former wasted no time making a splash with his new team. Carson Kelly, who was scratched Sunday due to an illness, will see the bulk of the playing time behind the plate with Amaya out, but McGuire will mix in here and there. The 30-year-old blasted three home runs and posted a .575 OPS in 53 games for the Red Sox last year, and he has a limited fantasy ceiling in 2025.
Called up as Amaya replacement

The Cubs selected McGuire's contract from Triple-A Iowa, and he'll start behind the plate against the Reds on Sunday. McGuire signed a minor-league deal with the Cubs in January and has spent the entire season at Iowa, slashing .282/.366/.465 with three home runs and two stolen bases in 21 games. He'll be joining the Cubs as a replacement for Miguel Amaya (oblique), who was placed on the 10-day injured list in a corresponding move. Carson Kelly will likely see the bulk of the playing time behind the dish for Chicago in Amaya's absence, though McGuire could be in store for a start or two per week.
MiLB deal from Northsiders

The Cubs signed McGuire to a minor-league contract Wednesday, Aram Leighton of Just Baseball reports. McGuire, who will turn 30 in March, sports a career .252/.300/.364 batting line over parts of seven major-league seasons. The veteran backstop will likely begin the 2025 campaign at Triple-A Iowa as catching depth.
Elects free agency

McGuire elected free agency Monday. McGuire initially remained in the Boston organization after being outrighted to Triple-A Worcester back in August, but with the minor-league season over he's now on the free-agent market. The veteran catcher is a career .252/.300/.364 hitter over parts of seven big-league seasons.
Outrighted to Worcester

McGuire cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Worcester by the Red Sox on Friday, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports. McGuire was DFA'd by Boston to make room on the roster for the acquisition of catcher Danny Jansen, but the former will stay within the organization. Before being jettisoned from the 40-man roster, McGuire was slashing .209/.280/.295 with three home runs and 18 RBI across 158 major-league plate appearances this season.
DFA'd by Boston

The Red Sox designated McGuire for assignment Sunday, Rob Bradford of WEEI.com reports. The 29-year-old will be bumped off the 26-man active roster and 40-man roster to make room for trade acquisition Danny Jansen, who will replace McGuire as Boston's new No. 2 catcher. McGuire posted a .209/.280/.295 slash line with three home runs in 52 games for the Red Sox this season.
Getting second straight start

McGuire will start at catcher and bat eighth in Sunday's game against the Royals, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports. McGuire will be rewarded with a second straight start to close out of the Red Sox's pre-All-Star-break schedule after he went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI in Saturday's 5-0 win. Though he's delivered two-hit performances in both of his last two starts, McGuire is still the clear No. 2 option at catcher behind Connor Wong, who holds a 204-point edge in OPS (.812 to .608) on the season.
Starts with Wong on paternity list

McGuire will start at catcher and bat eighth in Monday's game against the Blue Jays. McGuire will make the first of what will likely two or three starts versus Toronto after the Red Sox placed top backstop Connor Wong (personal) on the paternity list Monday. Assuming Wong is away from the Red Sox for the maximum three games, McGuire will presumably move back into the No. 2 role following Thursday's team off day. The Red Sox called up Tyler Heineman from Triple-A Worcester to provide an insurance option at catcher behind McGuire while Wong is on paternity leave.
