Jordan Diaz Latest News
Signs with Japanese team

Diaz signed a contract with the Orix Buffaloes of Nippon Professional Baseball on Friday. Diaz put together a solid season last year at Triple-A Las Vegas, slashing .301./.362/.529 with 22 homers and 85 RBI across 436 plate appearances. Rather than spend another season in the Athletics' farm system, the 24-year-old infielder will look to further his career overseas, though a return to the States may still be possible if his stock improves while in Japan.
Enjoying solid year in Vegas

Diaz owns a .281 average and .836 OPS across 272 plate appearances over 66 games with Triple-A Las Vegas this season. Diaz has spent the entire season with the Aviators, and he no longer holds a spot on the Athletics' 40-man roster after being designated for assignment May 23. However, the 23-year-old, who already boasted two very successful stints with Las Vegas during his minor-league career prior to his current Triple-A tenure, has put together a well-rounded line that includes 24 extra-base hits (11 doubles, one triple, 12 home runs), 46 RBI, 25 walks, 38 runs and a respectable 19.5 percent strikeout rate. Given he was able to occasionally hold his own against big-league pitching in each of the last two seasons (.634 OPS, 22 extra-base hits and 28 RBI across 105 games) and his youth, it wouldn't be out of the question for Diaz to be given another look in Oakland before the end of the season, perhaps as a September promotion.
Outrighted to Triple-A

Diaz cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Las Vegas by the Athletics on Monday. The 23-year-old was jettisoned from Oakland's 40-man roster last week but will remain in the organization as infield depth. Diaz has managed just a .204/.288/.327 batting line over 111 plate appearances with Las Vegas this season.
Removed from 40-man roster

The Athletics designated Diaz for assignment Thursday. At multiple points in the 2022 and 2023 seasons, Diaz looked to bea mainstay in Oakland's lineup, but he failed to make the Opening Day roster coming out of spring training and struggled to get going at a hitter-friendly environment at Triple-A Las Vegas, slashing just .204/.288/.327 over 111 plate appearances. He's still just 23 years old, so Diaz could draw interest on waivers from a team that thinks it might be able to help him tap back into the promise he displayed earlier in his career.
May need to work on conditioning

Diaz, who received a demotion to Triple-A Las Vegas on Sunday after a very slow start to spring, may need to improve his conditioning in order to earn a call back up to the big-league club, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. Diaz started 37 games at third base last season, but that didn't earn him enough capital to offset an .083 average across 10 Cactus League games to open spring training. The Athletics also have some viable contenders for the starting role at the hot corner, including Darell Hernaiz and Abraham Toro. As such, Diaz may have an uphill battle in the short term to log big-league at-bats, but getting into better condition will help his chances. "He's a kid that is working on certain things and understanding where he needs to be physically," manager Mark Kotsay said. "Getting to that place will help him not just this year, but for his future, too."
Optioned to Triple-A

Diaz was optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas on Sunday. Diaz had a rough go of it with the A's in Cactus League play, batting .083 with a double and two runs scored while striking out three times over 24 at-bats in 10 contests. He'll now look to get right with the Aviators before he inevitably gets another shot with the major-league roster in 2024.
