Goes on bereavement list
Atlanta placed Bummer on the bereavement list Friday. Bummer will miss at least the weekend series in Tampa Bay but could rejoin the club early next week in Toronto. Zach Thompson has taken his spot in the bullpen.
Takes loss in relief
Bummer (0-1) took the loss against the Padres on Saturday, allowing one run on one hit and one walk while striking out two across two-thirds of an inning. Bummer was called into action for the seventh inning after Spencer Schwellenbach tossed six scoreless frames. Bummer came out firing with two straight strikeouts, but he was lifted after giving up a ground-rule double from Jake Cronenworth and intentionally walking Xander Bogaerts. Yuli Gurriel proceeded to knock an RBI single off Daysbel Hernandez, and the run was credited to Bummer, who came away with the loss after Atlanta failed to score over the next two innings. Bummer has given up a run in each of his first two outings of the 2025 season.
Clean spring so far
Bummer has a 0.00 ERA and 4:1 K:BB through five Grapefruit League innings. The southpaw will be part of Atlanta's setup crew this season, along with right-hander Pierce Johnson and fellow lefty Dylan Lee. Bummer recorded a career-high 27 holds back in 2019 with the White Sox, and he could approach that number in 2025 given his impressive stuff -- he generated a 43.9 percent whiff rate with his sweeper last season, and no pitcher in baseball had a lower barrel rate allowed than his 1.3 percent.
Set for key setup role
Bummer is expected to become Atlanta's top left-hander setup man in front of closer Raisel Iglesias following the offseason departure of A.J. Minter (hip), David O'Brien of The Athletic reports. After recording 46 holds over his last three years with the White Sox, Bummer was dealt to Atlanta in November 2023 but had a bumpy 2024 debut with his new team, managing only two holds in 56 appearances with a 3.58 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 69:18 K:BB over 55.1 innings. The 31-year-old was the victim of some extraordinary bad luck however, as highlighted by his 2.22 FIP -- Bummer's barrel rate was in the 100th percentile and his groundball rate in the 98th percentile, but the squibs and flares he gave up kept finding holes. Dylan Lee could also see plenty of high-leverage work against southpaw hitters, but Bummer will get first crack at being the eighth-inning bridge to Iglesias, along with right-hander Pierce Johnson.
Gets new deal from Atlanta
Bummer signed a two-year, $13 million contract with Atlanta on Saturday. Bummer's original deal included two club options over the next two years, worth $7.25 million and $7.5 million, respectively. However, his latest contract will void those two option years while saving the team a bit of cash, as the left-hander is now due to make $3.5 million in 2025. The 31-year-old finished with a 3.58 ERA and 1.43 WHIP across 55.1 innings during his first season in Atlanta.
Club option will be exercised
Atlanta president of baseball operations Alex Anthopoulos said Friday that the team plans to pick up Bummer's $7.25 million club option for 2025, Grant McAuley of 92.9 The Game Atlanta reports. Bummer, 31, held a 3.58 ERA and 69:18 K:BB over 55.1 innings in 2024 in his first season in Atlanta. The left-hander could have an even more important role in 2025 with A.J. Minter heading into free agency and recovering from hip surgery.
Collects third win
Bummer (3-2) picked up the win Friday over the Marlins, allowing one hit and striking out two in a scoreless eighth inning. Entering the game with Atlanta down 3-2, the southpaw gave up a leadoff single to Xavier Edwards and watched the shortstop steal second base, but Bummer then proceeded to shut down what passes for the heart of the Miami order, including a strikeout of cleanup hitter Jonah Bride. Bummer has a 1.74 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 16:1 K:BB through 10.1 innings since the beginning of July, but Atlanta's deep bullpen keeps him out of consistent fantasy-friendly usage -- he has zero saves or holds on the season.
Not seeing high-leverage work
Bummer has posted a 3.62 ERA, 1.52 WHIP and 37:11 K:BB through 32.1 innings with two wins, zero saves and zero holds through 33 appearances. Acquired from the White Sox in the offseason to bolster Atlanta's relief corps, Bummer hasn't been able to claim a high-leverage role in a much deeper bullpen than he was part of in Chicago. The southpaw has been effective at keeping the ball in the park, serving up only one homer despite a 54.9 percent groundball rate that's his lowest mark since he was a rookie in 2017. Barring a rash of injuries ahead of him in the pecking order, Bummer will likely continue working in middle relief in the second half, limiting his fantasy value even in formats that use holds as well as saves.
